With a an ice ball of this size, you'll have rocks in your drink for over an hour before it melts. Aluminum is a great conductor of heat, so it quickly melts the ice outside of the form. Any size or shape of ice can be used to create a sphere, however a block that's roughly the right shape will be fastest. Ice spheres can be made in about 2 minutes, or less if you preheat the mold with warm tap water.
